OKEHAMPTON sent out a civic party this week to welcome a Royal Navy commander, en-route on foot from John O?Groats to Land?s End. Jane Allen, a commander in the Royal Naval Reserve, had covered more than 1,000 miles of her solo mission when she arrived at Okehampton station on Wednesday morning, to set off on the next leg of her journey to Lifton. Her marathon undertaking, which will have taken around three months by the time she completes it this week, is in aid of the Royal British Legion?s Poppy Appeal. Among those who braved the poor weather to cheer her on her way were the county chairman of the Royal British Legion, Brian Cumming, and Okehampton chairman Ray Rattenbury, who both handed over cheques. Also present were the Legion?s county president Major General Andrew Keeling, Okehampton town clerk Don Bent, and Okehampton Camp Commandant Lieutenant Colonel Tony Clark. Royal British Legion West Devon spokesman Peter Brotherton also met Jane and was able to ask her about her feat. ?She?s kept for the most part to back lanes and footpaths, thus making the walk longer and more difficult,? he said. Jane, who lives in Landscove, Devon, is a Commander with the Royal Naval Reserve based at HMS Vivid, Plymouth. She works for Her Majesty?s Court Service but is also a volunteer caseworker for The Royal British Legion and a part-time member of the UK?s armed forces who has just returned from a six month deployment to Baghdad in Iraq. Her husband Frank has supported her throughout her journey by driving her overnight accommodation for the walk ? a donated motor home. She has now raised in excess of £5000 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, and is hoping that further donations may still come in. ?The poppy appeal is something very personal and close to my heart,? Jane said. ?I want to show my support for those families of armed forces personnel, who continue to lose loved ones in conflicts all over the world.?
