Tavistock Ladies 2
Totnes Ladies 4
TAVISTOCK Ladies First XI hockey team opened the league games against Totnes and had to pull out all the stops.
Totnes took the lead with a direct hit at the goalkeeper. Tavistock made it 1-1 as Cath Collar hit a strong ball into the D for Judy Smallacombe to receive it and reverse stick flick it against the Totnes goalkeeper. Totnes scored again with Tavistock still not really getting any major breakthroughs. Sue Cork, Babs Horton and Rebecca Hutton worked to pass the ball around the pitch but Tavistock found it hard to shake off their opponents during free hits.
However, Tavistock found new strength — Laura Armstrong took advantage after receiving a good pass in and hit the ball straight past the goalkeeper to end the first half at 2-2.
In the second half, Tavistock appeared to want the victory more than the opposition. Unfortunately, Totnes had a couple of lucky breaks and despite the efforts of the goalie, Rebecca Creasey, managed to put two more goals away. Tavistock's captain, Fiona Dunn, although disappointed with the results, had great admiration for the team who battled well.
Tavistock: Rebecca Creasey, Babs Horton, Fiona Dunn (captain), Sandra Collar, Rebecca Hutton, Sue Hornby, Cath Collar, Laura Armstrong, Lisa Hogan, Sue Cork, Judy Smallacombe.
Player of the match: Lisa Hogan.
This Saturday Tavistock are away to St Agnes with a 2.30pm start.
