ARTICULATED lorries which feature heavily in Tavistock Carnival will not be taking part this year. New legislation means only small vehicles and trailers and walkers will be involved in the procession in July. Rules relating to tachographs prevent lorries being on the road on Saturday if their long-distance journeys start on Sundays, which most of them do. But carnival organisers Tavistock Lions' Club is remaining upbeat about the popular event: 'Whilst disappointed at this turn of events, we understand the reasons behind the decision and are very grateful for the support that companies such as Langdon Transport, Heywood Haulage and Dave Pethick Transport have given to the carnival over the past years,' said Lions spokesman Steve Grummitt. 'However, the club is not down-hearted and is now seeking local companies or organisations with smaller open backed vehicles or trailers which would like to take part in one of the most successful carnivals in the South West.' Lion member Roger Lethbridge, the organiser of the procession, said that perhaps the thought of having to man and decorate a long trailer may have been off-putting for some organisations but with a smaller vehicle it would be a lot easier and not so expensive. Many more walking entries are expected in the future and for this reason three new classes are being introduced — for groups of up to six, which would be ideal for a family or group of friends, groups of over six people and the third for walkers with a vehicle. There will still be the existing categories of visiting queens, humorous, artistic and trade and the walking groups can opt to enter in those categories if they wish. Prize money has been increased in recent years. Anyone wishing to help with a vehicle should contact Mr Lethbridge on 01822 613794. Tavistock Carnival Week will start on Saturday July 14 with Jazz at Harford Bridge Holiday Park culminating with the procession the following Saturday July 21, the theme for which this year is 'Music.'
