BURGESSES in Tavistock will soon be presented with a badge of honour for their distinguished service to the town. The production of 'Honoured Burgess' badges was given the go-ahead by members of Tavistock Town Council's finance committee last Tuesday. The proposal for the badges was made by Cllr Jenny Metcalf, who, realising there was nothing to make the burgesses known, felt they should be recognised for the work they have contributed to Tavistock. Cllr Metcalf said: 'It wouldn't cost a great deal, we don't need many; they would be very special and very good to have.' Tavistock mayor Anne Johnson said: 'I think it is good to recognise them for the service these people have made to the town.' Councillors were shown two designs for the badges. Both depict the town's crest but had a slight difference in size and decoration. They chose the more discreet design — it will cost £480 to make 25 badges. Since 1984 the town council has been empowered to give the distinction of 'honoured burgess', a civic rank, to people who have done good for the town, worked hard and been a prominent citizen. There are seven burgesses in Tavistock. The decision was due to be ratified by the full council at its meeting on Tuesday.
