Horsham Cup semi-final U18s
Lipson 2
Tavistock Thistles 6
TAVISTOCK had the worst possible start any team could have wished for. A clear handball was missed for a Thistles penalty, and in the first five minutes Lipson had scored and converted a penalty.
Dale Mullen had to fire up his team-mates which he did throughout. The next 20 minutes were end to end, until Ben Stephens shot to the back of the net for Thistles' first.
It was Thistles' turn to come forward to take a penalty for which Stephens gained his double. Craig Groombridge and Seth Krotke provided speed down both wings, passing some fantastic balls across the Lipson goalmouth for the forwards.
When Lipson broke through Shaun Maloney was able to show his skills to prevent them from scoring.
The third goal came courtesy of Krotke.
The second half opened as did the heavens. Thistles realised the next 45 minutes were crucial. The defence of Phil Peers, Ali Jowett, Dan Credicott and Darren Sambells knew it was important to keep the Lipson players out of their area.
Thistles' fourth goal came from Steve Gibbings' cracking header and he produced another great run to slot home his second.
Thistles were producing great football. Captain Lee Wickett dealt the sixth goal with a huge run to go one-on-one with the Lipson keeper.
The last 15 minutes saw substitute Luke Huxham take over play up front, and although he produced some fine runs he was unlucky not to make it seven.
Thistles thanked their supporters who braved the bad weather.
Man of the match: Lee Wickett.
Cup final Sunday April 25 at the Kimberley Stadium, Saltash.
