At approximately 3am, two men entered the premises after smashing the window of the front door. The thieves were only in the garage for a short amount of time, but managed to steal a substantial amount of tobacco and cigarettes, worth approximately £2,000.
The premises will be closed while the scene is cleared and once scenes of crime officers have attended.
Police are looking for a light coloured saloon vehicle, which would have been driving around Tavistock at 3am.
DS Bev Havis said the theft was a ’real loss’ to the owners of the privately owned business: ’This is a real loss to Mr and Mrs Haskins who own this garage and have owned the business for 40 years. It is a substantial amount [stolen] and has hit them hard. They will be back to business as soon as possible.’
