NEIGHBOURHOOD police officers and PCSOs in Okehampton are stepping up patrols in the picnic area beside the Okement River behind Lidl after issues of vandalism and disturbance reported by residents.
A silver birch tree planted by the Okement Rivers’ Improvement Group was snapped off and thrown in the river, leaving just one of a trio originally planted by the group. ORIG is now considering removing the picnic table and benches in a last-ditch attempt to deter anti-social behaviour.
The area has a history of vandalism. A statue of a hind and her fawn, commissioned by ORIG, had to removed from this area to Simmons Park after being repeatedly damaged.
PC Nathan Walker said: ‘We are aware of the snapped tree and the ongoing issues in that area. We have increased patrols in the area and are speaking with residents, the local rivers’ group and the young people using the area to try and understand the issue and provide a solution.’
The police thanked residents and others who have contacted them after witnessing anti-social behaviour or criminal damage.
‘This has been a great help with the recording of crimes and gathering of evidence, which all builds a picture of what is happening and when,’ said PCSO Lisa Smith.
’We would still like to encourage people to call us to report anything they see, as this is working well.’
