The Gulworthy Nativity Play held at Morwellham Quay on December 19 presented the story of Jesus’ birth in a fabulous setting under a clear blue sky.

Joined by members of the benefice’s parishes of Brentor and Tavistock many of the large crowd dressed up and everyone followed the actors around the Quay, via the Ship Inn to the old school yard, as carols were sung to the accompaniment of the Tavistock Stannary Brass Band.

Mary, played by Eva Mansfield, and Joseph (played by Will Hutchison) led spectators to the stable with their pony and they were joined by two very woolly sheep from the Edwards’ farm. The star of the show was, quite rightly, the baby Jesus, played brilliantly by four-month-old Katie who seemed to like a bed of straw.

The Reverend John Reed said: ‘People were delighted by the whole thing and asked for a repeat next year. The core message was clear: the birth of hope in the Son of God.’
