WEST Devon Police are urging the public to be aware of a nationwide iTunes gift card scam which has led to £6.5-million in reported losses.
Fraudsters have been gaining people’s trust and getting them to pass on the serial numbers on the back of gift cards.
Action Fraud, the fraud body which works with the police, is reminding people not to give out the serial numbers other than to pay for goods from the retailer printed on the front of the card.
PCSO Lisa Smith of Devon and Cornwall Police said people should always question unrequested or unexpected requests for their personal or financial information.
‘Even if someone knows your basic details, eg name and address, it doesn’t mean they are genuine,’ she said. ‘As well as iTunes gift cards fraudsters also use Steam cards to scam people out of money. Never give numbers on gift cards to someone you don’t know.
‘If you know someone who is vulnerable and could fall victim to this type of scam, please speak to them about this campaign and share the advice.’
Fraud can be reported online at www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.
