MORE than 400 people pulled on their walking boots and trekked 25 miles from Ashburton to Tavistock for the annual Abbot's Way Walk.

The walk has taken place annually for around 45 years and raises money for the Friends of Tavistock and District Youth Network to help young people in the area.

Peter Challiss, co-ordinator of the event, said: 'Ashburton, Plymouth and Tavistock branches of the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team and Tavistock Radio manned the checkpoints, and people were given a pasty and a drink at the end of the walk.

Around 440 people started and 394 finished the walk. There were no major injuries just a few worn out people and a few blisters.

'We don't know how much we have raised yet but we normally raise about £1,000. Last year we helped the guides go to the Jamboree, heavily subsidised a residential weekend, and gave travel grants to a few youth clubs.'
