A TRIATHLETE from Bere Alston will be undertaking a 24-hour fundraising marathon at Burrator on Saturday, September 27 in aid of the village's primary school. Nathan Newton, 28, will be cycling non-stop for 12 hours around the lake, and then donning his running shoes to complete another 12 hours of running laps of the reservoir loop road. In May, Nathan took part in a 24-hour running event that was for charity and managed 85 miles in 24 hours. He said: 'I am doing this because it was my primary school as a child and I know how important a good school is for a small village. We have two young children of our own and they will eventually attend Bere Alston Primary.' The fundraiser is to raise money for Bere Alston Primary School's 'Forest School Project'. Each week Bere Alston Primary School holds a forest school session. Children go outside, come rain or shine, to take part in exciting outdoor activities, from learning about nature and the changing seasons, to tool safety and cooking on a campfire. As well as linking in with the National Curriculum the forest school programme carefully blends activities that build the children's confidence and an attachment to our natural environment. At Bere Alston Primary School there is a large playing field with some trees and the school is now in need of help to improve its resources. With the money raised the school will be able to create designated outdoor learning areas with outdoor seating and a canopy, a wood store and wood craft area, space for growing fruit and vegetables, as well as an outdoor science lab and outdoor clothing. Headteacher Kim Wild said: 'We are very grateful to our ex-pupil Nathan Newton for his outstanding effort to raise money on behalf of the school by cycling and running for 24 hours. 'The children will all benefit hugely from his enthusiasm to put something back into his primary school.' Sponsor forms are available at Bere Alston?Primary School, Bere Alston chemist, Manor Garage and at the event.
