A RECORD turnout participated in this year's Tavy Town relay races with more than 200 runners turning out for the event.
The races, held in the Meadows on Thursday evening as part of the carnival celebrations, have become an established fixture for club athletes and local enthusiasts.
Fifty runners, mainly youngsters, took part in the fun run and included many junior members of Tavistock Athletic Club.
The second race of the evening was the junior relay race for 10 to 15 year olds staged over an 800-metre course. This was well supported and was won by the Lipson Community College team.
Local teams were well represented with James Barrett, Edward Smith, Jonny Smith and Adam Roberts finishing in second place and winning the Under 14s' trophy in a time of 15mins 49secs.
Jake Rendle, Ceri Russell-Wilson, Luke Aspen and Nathan Wonnacott finished in third place, winning the Under 11s' trophy with Sarah Barratt, Nina Jackson, Suzanna Bone and Tamsin Bryant winning the Under 12s' trophy in fourth place.
In the senior relay the senior men from Exmouth Harriers were the overall winners in a good time of 21mins 24secs. They were followed home by the Plymouth Harriers team with Jerry Rickeard, Mark Hancock, Charlie Lloyd and Martin Exley representing the local Tamar Valley Hash team finishing in a strong third place in a time of 22mins 32secs. This also gave them the first local team trophy.
Richard Drage, Mike Lewis, Jon Meek, and Steve Groombridge making up the Tavistock Athletic club senior men's team finished in fifth place in a time of 22mins 52secs beating many of the other running club teams.
Tavistock Hockey Club continued to support the event, entering two separate teams, the first of which was a mixed team including Fiona Dunn, Matthew Way, Becky Wallace and Nick Boot-Handford who finished in a good 15th place in a time of 25mins 36secs.
They were followed closely by team colleagues Rob Kirby, Phil Honey, Frank Hornby and John Barrett finishing just six seconds later.
Tavistock Joggers were also well represented with three separate teams who finished in 27th, 28th and 29th positions.
Following the presentation of the trophies Robin Musgrave announced that in agreement with the Tavistock Lions, the proceeds from this year's event, likely to be in excess of £350, will be donated to Sport Relief.
