A MEN?S individual open medal competition took place at Tavistock Golf Club last Saturday, when 162 competitors from 18 clubs took part.
The winner of the E H Knape Scratch Cup was Jon Gynne with gross 71. The winner of the J F Luxton Handicap was Richard Wraith with a net score of 69. There were 12 twos with the winners collecting 6 balls.
The monthly competition in May was played for by 96 golfers with Joe Lyddon winning the Major Porter Medal with a net score of 67. Tony Ingram won the Artisan Bowl, scoring net 66.
The Whitsun Bowl, played in very poor weather conditions, was won by one of the many improving juniors, Sam Brockington, scoring net 68.
A total of 66 pairs played on the Dartmoor 4s at Tavistock and Yelverton.
Both courses were in very good condition which was reflected by the scoring.
After the first round at Tavistock a total of 5 pairs shared the lead and a further 9 pairs were within 2 points of the lead.
The winners were D and P Gove; 2, M Fricker and G Amman; 3, W and L Alderman. Over the weekend only 5 twos were scored; 4 at Tavistock and only one, by Keith Klein and Will Spearing at Yelverton, who won 95 golf balls for their effort.
Sunday, June 6 saw the Mixed Open, played by 82 pairs, with excellent scoring. June and Ken Kendall won on the back 9 from A Steedon and L Steedon of Torquay each with 44 points.
Two friendly fixtures have been played with a victory against Bigbury but a loss against Launceston. The annual Committee v Past Captain?s fixture saw a very competitive match. The outcome was a victory for the more experienced team; the Past Captain?s winning 4 matches to 2.
After an undefeated first two games of the season, the Plymouth Sound team lost at Elfordleigh, despite playing some good golf. The pair of Graham Ruth and Geoff Blainer scoring the only 1/2 point, with Geoff scoring a hole in one and Graham having 7 birdies.
