THE race to vote for super-fast broadband improvements in exchanges across the country has now ended — and Tavistock, unfortunately, was not among the final six winners.

BT's Race to Infinity campaign was offering super-fast broadband to the six telephone exchanges with the most votes as a percentage of lines per exchange.

Tavistock came 17th out of 2,495 telephone exchanges.

Tavistock campaigner John Sheldon said having the largest vote in the South West will hopefully highlight Tavistock: 'I would like to thank the people and businesses who supported this by voting.

'I will continue to campaign until the position in Tavistock is known.

'Somewhere in West Devon should be considered for improved broadband infrastructure.

'There is no reason why it should not be Tavistock.'

Mr Sheldon said there is still an announcement to be made this month, naming the 40 rural market towns to get fibre optic roll out in 2011.
