Tavistock ABC’s junior boxers Leah Howe and Freddy Owen travelled to Truro Amateur Boxing Club’s on November 3.

Leah faced local opposition in Truro’s Lauren Partridge. This was a good contest with both contestants trying to gain superiority. Leah’s better lead punches and crosses soon began to show and her better attacking was soon causing Partridge problems. The third round, in particular, showed Leah’s growing confidence and she dominated for much of the round. Although a ‘skills’ (unscored) bout this was a good experience for Leah and she showed much potential.

Freddy Owen’s bout was his first time in the ring in a skills bout. The Tavistock boxer showed good footwork and variation in punches. Freddy’s opponent was Reece McCormack from Bodmin who showed true spirit in countering but had problems with the speed and dexterity of Freddy. Over three rounds Freddy showed some good skills and looks good for a future in the ring.

Youth boxer Nathan Sellars travelled to Falmouth this weekend to face Ollie Martin of Falmouth ABC. Over three hotly contested rounds supremacy was difficult to find as the two boxers were fairly evenly matched. The first round opened tentatively with each man trying to look for the weakness in the other’s defence.

Round two was similar but there was an improvement in Nathan’s work rate. In the third he upped the work rate again and his left lead was scoring points well. In the end the decision was given to Tavistock ABC’s Nathan Sellars by a majority decision.
