Devon Seconds B West

Yelverton v Ivybridge

ON a very warm day at Langton Park, Yelverton 2nd XI played Ivybridge 2nd XI in the B Division West of the seconds league.

With the captain stuck in traffic, G Keen won the toss and elected to bat.

Opening the batting for Yelverton were C Cottrell and B Spear Snr and J Benson and G Berry opening the bowling for Ivybridge. The openers toiled away in the sun to amass an opening stand of 116 before Cottrell was out for a fine 37.

M Symes went to a very fine catch in the deep off the bowling of Northmore without scoring (116-2). G Keen and Spear then added 27 for the third wicket before Spear finally fell when he was stumped charging down the wicket off Northmore's bowling for an excellent 78 (8 fours and 3 sixes).

Next out was S Colmer bowled by Clough for 1 (148-4). S Betts and his oddly coloured socks went out to join Keen and they both looked comfortable until Betts was lbw for 11 off 12 balls (2 fours) 166-5. C Dawe then added 16 off 17 before being bowled by Benson.

Captain C Vinson joined Keen in the middle, until Keen was finally out for an excellent 45 (211-7). Vinson on 6 was joined by his brother B Spear Jnr and they added 48 runs off the remaining 27 balls to take Yelverton to 259-7. Spear finished on 10 and Vinson 35 (from 17 balls).

Ivybridge bowling figures were: Benson 43-2, Berry 0-54, Hall 0-46, Lancaster 0-30, Clough 3-52 and Northmore 2-28.

It was not long before the first breakthrough came when C Cottrell took an outstanding catch in the slips off Rushton and Clough. The very next over Colmer clean bowled Kidd with a jaffer for 0 (4-2 in the 4th over).

Ivybridge then had two new batsmen at the wicket in Solomon and Smith, who proceeded to add 46 before Rushton bowled Solomon for 43. Vinson then bowled Sparkes for 0 (53-4), and Spear bowled Smith for 26 (67-5).

Northmore and Tuckwell had added 46 before C Dawe had Northmore caught by Spear Snr for 13, then B Lander caught and bowled G Lancaster for 5 (122-7).

The final three wickets soon followed — Hall caught Betts bowled Dawe, Tuckwell caught Betts bowled Lander for 27 and finally Benson bowled Dawe for 13, leaving Berry not out on 6 and Ivybridge all out for 153.

Yelverton bowling: Rushton 2-30, Colmer 1-14, Vinson 1-36, Spear Jnr 1-20, Dawe 3-30 and Lander 2-13.
