Whitchurch firsts v Shaldon Optimists

BATTING first Shaldon were careful against the accurate opening spell of Freddy Frost (0 for 40) and Jez Stokes (1 for 31). The early wicket of Tuffnel (14) and only 35 runs in the first 10 overs would have pleased both captains.

McKenna (57) and Ballman (52) in a partnership of 106 started the rot as far as Whitchurch were concerned. Although the number of extras was much lower the fielding was not as good as recently and at 110-1 at the half way stage the signs were ominous.

Darren Sambells (2-58) showing a return to form made a breakthrough but Couch came in and blasted 63 to take the score above 200.

In reply Whitchurch got themselves into a winning position before throwing it away. Billie Barriball (26) and Martin Credicott (38) set the foundation. Although Rob Bone and Ben Powell came and went quickly Josh Meadows took his form from the seconds with another imperious knock, this time of 71. At 118-3 at the half way stage the game was finely balanced.

Shaldon brought on Crouch (5-45) and wickets started to fall. No one stuck around long enough with Meadows, who was seventh out in the 36th over. Six wickets fell inside six overs which will cause some thought amongst the selection committee.
