THE West Devon Badminton Squad celebrated after the announcement at the closing ceremony that they played their part in helping West Devon win the 'Fairness Shield' at the Devon Games to Inspire held at Exeter University. The annual youth games event challenges the nine districts of Devon to bring teams of juniors to play in different sporting competitions. The two West Devon badminton teams had been coached during the four weeks leading up to the event by coaches from Tavyside Badminton and were managed, on the day, by two juniors, Celine Conley, a UKCC level one badminton coach, and Olivia Walker. The boys team arrived to the news that their strongest player would not be playing in the competition due to a wrist injury. The remaining players took the news in their stride and all played well to take a well earned seventh place in what turned out to be a strong boys competition. The girls' team had never all played together due to one player joining the squad at the last minute. However, that did not stop the team winning against the other districts in their group and top their group by nearly 90 points ahead of the next team. In the semi-final they came up against a strong South Hams team and narrowly lost 2-1 to come a creditable fourth overall.
