WEIR Quay Sailing Club's annual Tamar Bridge Race last Sunday was beset by fickle winds and an accelerating ebb tide. Unfortunately there were not the minimum 25 boats demanded to the start line for that weekend's Guinness World Record attempt of the world's largest sailing race. However with three boats joining in from Cargreen SC, 12 raced in the Tony Newman Trophy. Eight of the slower boats were becalmed downstream of Weir Quay, in need of a tow home while four boats ghosted past the finishing line, with only 46 seconds, adjusted-time separating the winner Steve Kirby from Mick Flanagan in second place. The event raised £76.50p in aid of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation by the WQSC members. RESULTS: 1, Steve Kirby, Lark; 2, Mick Flanagan, Laser; 3, John and Yannika Tomlinson, Wayfarer 3; 4, Aaron Kirby and Eleanor Eastman, Laser. Did not finish, Alison Webster.
