A 5-0 win for Conservative A over West Devon D further strengthened their grip on the Tavistock Snooker league top spot, albeit, a rather flattering score line, that did not reflect how close West Devon came in all but one of the frames.
Frames from Con A’s Wiles, Bell, Babb and Caruthers all came down to the last few balls against Decieco, Murton, Grigg and Shrimpton (junior) respectively. Key moment pots from Wiles, Bell and Babb secured their points with a 25 break from Carruthers securing his.
The final frame was yet another master class display from the ‘evergreen’ Tom Evans (20) as he clinched the maximum five for Con A. The Conservative A runaway train remains on course.
Despite floundering at the lower end of the league Conservative Z managed a surprise win over the Golf Club A. Symons for the Con Z made heavy going of his narrow win over Ninnis and on several occasions looked to have handed the win to his opponent.
Fitzsimmons unavailable for best part of the season showed his worth to Con Z with a fine win over Pope in spite of Pope’s remarkable come back at the latter stages of the frame.
Mckechnie (junior) drew the short straw against Golf A’s ace player, Turnbull, and found it difficult to keep up with the latter’s potting skills; it looked for a moment as if the lead may slip but Mayors of Con Z firmly re-established his team’s command of the game with an emphatic win over Doidge.
Whitley rescued his team from further embarrassment beating McKechnie (senior) comfortably in the final frame.
League minnows Conservative B gave a good account of themselves against high flying ‘big fish’ neighbours West Devon A, narrowly going down 2-3.
WD A’s Brookes made short work of Boyd with a slick 48 allowing Boyd no chance of recovery, followed up by his team mate Lawrence dominating his game against Hooper to put WD A two-up.
Match of the night then followed as Con B’s Roger Rich deployed his well-practiced ‘four cushion doubles’ shot, to good effect, as he put danger-man Heathman to the sword. Despite having to overcome periods of good fortune from Heathman, a sumptuous black ball finish clinched it for Rich.
Andy Smith of Con B team enjoyed his three visits to the table before Kevin Rich produced a fluent 56 break, and that was that.
The final frame saw the B Team reduce their arrear as John Rich ‘out ground’ the ‘grinder’, Morris to nick the frame with a cool black ball ‘grand finale’.
