Okehampton Argyle 4

Liverton United 2

HAVING turned in a superb team performance to beat Exwick Villa in the week, Argyle went into their last home game of the season knowing a win would give them their highest points return in their SWPL league history.

Argyle started the game confidently and it was no surprise when they took an eight minute lead courtesy of Alex Wren's first goal of the season, when he arrived late into the penalty area to smash Ross Voaden's set back low into the bottom corner.

Argyle were playing some of their best pass and move football of the season and they increased their lead in the 20th minute when Dale Chadwick powerfully headed home Tallan Burns' corner at the far post.

Having run Liverton ragged in the opening half hour, Argyle inexplicably took their foot off the gas and Nathan Hebbes reduced the arrears for the visitors in the 31st minute when he beat two Argyle defenders and shot low past Aaron Dearing.

Almost immediately Argyle swept down the other end, Roger Bonaparte sent Jason Cordice clear down the right and his low cross was steered home at the near post by Tallan Burns to restore Argyle's two goal cushion going into the break.

The second half started a lot more evenly then the first with chances created and missed at both ends, then on the hour mark a brief spat in midfield between Argyle's Ross Voaden and Liverton's Phil Kingman resulted in both players being sent off.

Okehampton immediately switched Roger Bonaparte into defence leaving Jason Cordice to plough a lone furrow up front, but Liverton appeared to cope better with going down to ten men and in the 65th minute the lively Ollie Aplin lost his marker at the far post to head home Liverton's second and two minutes later the same player thought he had brought Liverton level but Aaron Dearing made a superb save to keep Argyle in front.

Slightly against the run of play Argyle broke away down the right in the 77th minute where Brad Ausden played a neat one two with Tallan Burns and crossed for Jason Cordice to head home Argyle's fourth goal and effectively kill the game.

Despite some further late pressure from Liverton, Argyle saw the game out to gain the three points that puts them into the record books.

Exwick Villa 0

Okehampton Argyle 2

Argyle arrived at a beautifully sunny Foxhayes on Tuesday against Devon Premier Cup finalists Exwick Villa.

Villa were themselves boosted by the inclusion of Jimmy Hinds and Jake Wannell from Southern League Tiverton Town, but despite the home side having the lion's share of possession, in a first half bereft of any real clear goal scoring opportunities, Argyle's defence was holding firm. It was not until Argyle manager Kevin Taylor introduced his substitutes on the hour that the game sparked into life; Almost immediately, Brad Ausden played in Tallan Burns and the young midfielder weaved his way to the by line before cutting the ball back to Jason Cordice who finished coolly from close range.

Exwick were still dominating possession but the next chance again fell to Jason Cordice whose attempted chip was well saved by Fred Tonkin in the Exwick goal.

With eight minutes remaining Exwick looked to be right back in it as Fred Kingdom was tripped by Argyle keeper Aaron Dearing, with the referee pointing to the penalty spot but giving Dearing the benefit of the doubt as to whether he was the last man and showing him a yellow card instead of red.

Tom Taylor took the spot kick which appeared to move from its spot as he kicked it and Dearing dived low to his right to make a fine save, his third penalty in a row.

As Exwick pushed for a late equaliser they were caught on the counter attack as Tallan Burns sent Jason Cordice racing clear and Argyle's leading goal scorer calmly slotted the ball past Fred Tonkin to seal a hard earned three points.

Argyle manager Kevin Taylor was delighted with what he described as the best collective 'team' performance since the away win at Tavistock back at the beginning of the season.
