aaTHE Okehampton Squash Club teams again had contrasting fortunes this week. While the first team continued their fine run of form with another resounding victory against Paignton 3, the seconds fought hard but ultimately suffered a heavy defeat against their unbeaten opponents Newton Abbot 4.
For the first team Dan Yeoman won 3-0 against a tricky and unconventional player while Simon Ramsay gave an impressive performance by also winning 3-0. Phil Allin came from 1-2 down to win and Phil Kemsley at string 2 had to battle hard but used his drops to good effect to win 3-1. At string 1 Arnie Searle came up against a player in good form and eventually lost out 1-3. This was another 4-1 victory for the team, the third match in a row they have won by this scoreline.
The second team came up against Newton Abbot 4, who are unbeaten all season and are strong across all strings. Despite the heavy loss the Oke second team battled well and only lost several games by the narrowest of margins. As has been the case all season, closing out winning positions has proven to be their weakness.
Pete Twort at string 5 played well and showed good variation in his game to match his opponent and only tiring legs at the end saw his opponent pull away to win 3-1. Barrie Sharpe and Stuart Lord at strings 4 and 3 were up against players who proved too strong.
At string 2 Shane Vallance had a number of long rallies and close games against an opponent who had the edge with an accurate short game. Shawn Jones again fought hard in his match at string 1 but the long rallies at the start of the match again resulted in a tired legs in the latter stages, costing Shawn an opportunity for a victory.
Although the team went down 20-2, this does not fully illustrate some good displays and tight games, against a side who have won easily against most of the teams in the league.
