Devon seconds E West

Whitchurch seconds v

Cornwood fourths

IT was only through a great deal of hard work that Whitchurch managed to fulfil this fixture and after that anything else was a bonus.

Asked to bat first, Whitchurch started well. Alford and Dunne seeing off the opening bowlers. Ben Hodge then added 20 with Dunne for the second wicket and at 50-1 at the half way stage Whitchurch were well set. A heavy shower forced the players from the field and an early tea to be taken. On the resumption, seven overs had been lost from the innings, meaning that Whitchurch had to accelerate.

As always trying to force the pace brought wickets with O'Hay benefitting the most taking 7 -19. Tamblin managed 14 before being well caught by Walke. Whitchurch collapsing to 86 all out. A noble effort given the strength of the side they had on the park.

Cornwood lost Goodliffe early and Skeemer soon after to give Whitchurch a point. The latter superbly caught one handed by Smerdon off Tamblin (2-40).

Griffith (47 not out) and Walke (24 not out) ensure no further loss, to see Cornwood home by eight wickets.

This was a valiant effort by Whitchurch, with grateful thanks to all those that played to make up the side.
