ON Sunday, Mary Sargeant of the Bere Alston Trekkers running group completed her first triathlon at the age of 70.

‘It was on my bucket list,’ she said. On a really hot day at Wadebridge Mary swam, cycled and ran her way to seventh place out of the 14 competitors; with men and women of all ages in the novice event. She won the super veteran category. ‘Hardly surprising,’ she said, ‘few people over 60 are daft enough to do this for the first time.’

Mary thanked her swimming coach, Liz Vernon, for all her help with training.

She is planning to complete another two triathlons in the series, at Truro in August and Falmouth in September as she had such fun competing.

On Saturday, Bere Alston Trekkers Paul and Debbie Ashton took part in The Something Wild Trail Running Festival — a family friendly trail running event at Huccaby Farm, Hexworthy.

Nestled in a secluded valley and surrounded by the fabulous landscape of Dartmoor it was a perfect little haven for trail runners and their families.

The festival provided scenic trail races for all levels: an ultra-marathon, a marathon, a half marathon, 5K and 10K races as well as children’s races.

All courses included tough climbs, enjoyable downhills and, of course, Dartmoor’s best trails and views. Paul and Debbie took part in the 10K, Debbie finishing in one hour 35 minutes 06 seconds and Paul in 1.35.41.
