MORE than 40 different sports will be on offer during the Okehampton Sports and Fitness Festival which runs from June 30 to July 8 but any clubs wishing to add more to the list are being urged to get involved.
Last year's event attracted more than 2,000 participants from all over Devon and further afield, but this year the event is encompassing the Devon Games to Inspire, where young people aged 8 to 16 compete for their regions, and a Primary Olympics Week.?It means up to 5,000 people are expected to attend.
Fifteen action-packed sporting events will be staged across Simmons Park, Parklands and Okehampton College as well as Okehampton Table Tennis Club and Skatepark on the first day of the festival.
There will be plenty of opportunities for friends, family and work colleagues to form teams for football, golf, squash and rounders competitions and sports as diverse as martial arts, surfing, cycling and trampolining will take place in venues within a 15-mile radius of Okehampton.
Fencing at Okehampton Castle and walking at some Dartmoor beauty spots, including Meldon and Castle Drogo, will help to promote the area's stunning scenery.
A full programme will be available shortly but manager of Okehampton Community Recreation Association Stuart Lord is urging clubs who wish to involve their sport to contact him.
He said: 'We want to get as many clubs and organisations involved as possible.
'We also want to attract people from all over Devon to try something new and maybe form teams with friends — there really is something for everybody.
'This year's festival is really shaping up to be the best yet and it was great to attract the prestigious Devon Games to Inspire in this Olympic year.
'The festival's growing reputation and diversity of activities on offer really allows us to show the Okehampton area as a fantastic place to live, work, play and visit.'
