Devon D Whitchurch v Clyst St George A FINE afternoon at Whitchurch witnessed a wonderful game of cricket. The home side batted first and soon lost Alford. Charlie Barriball and Ashley Woodrow steadied the ship but fluency was hard to find. The first meaningful partnership came from skipper for the day Billy Barriball and a dogged Rob Bone. They added 40 for the fourth wicket. Bone then found a trusty ally in Ben Powell. They had added 50 for the 5th wicket when Bone was run out for 47. Powell marshalled the remaining overs as Sambells came in to blast a few quick runs. A few cameos and Powell's 32 not out meant Whitchurch closed on 182-8. The wickets were shared around amongst Clyst's six bowlers. Clyst St George's reply made a good start. Whitchurch bowler Hammy Kerswill was steady but the elusive breakthrough was a long time coming. Ferro (22), Pullan (23) and Cook (46) put their side in a commanding position. Luke Bandhu was also going well until a freak accident during a quick run caused the game to be suspended.  Bandhu was taken to hospital in an ambulance with a broken arm. On the resumption Whitchurch were rejuvenated. A few tight overs and the run rate climbed. The wickets were shared around, but the accuracy of Kerswill stood out — his nine overs costing just 18 runs. Eleven runs were needed from the final over. Billy entrusted younger brother Charlie with the responsibility which was repaid with a fine delivery to remove Laverick. Whitchurch squeezed home by seven runs to record their second win of the season.
