TAVISTOCK Golf Club men veterans joined 11 other qualifying teams from Devon and Cornwall in the final round of the Harry Champion Trophy. 

Played at The Point of Polzeath Golf Club the Tavistock team convincingly won three matches and halved the fourth but were beaten by the Boringdon team into second place.  

Veterans’ captain Paul Congo said: ‘It was an excellent day and it was a great performance from all the players and, though missing out on winning the trophy,  we were delighted to come away with the runners up salver.’   

The ladies had a successful Guest Day and there was close scoring. 

The winning pair were teenagers junior captain Emma Greening and her guest, from Thailand, Moya Jane Harris with the score of 44 points on countback from Sue Eastwood and guest Jane Warren. 

In the third place with 43pts were Sally Timpson and her guest Sheila Couch. 

Moya Jane also won the nearest the pin in two on the 14th and guest Kate Ball won on the seventh. Nearest the pin on the fourth and tenth were won by Maureen Postles and Sheila Couch respectively.

The lady veterans played their qualifying round for the Devon County Ladies’ Veterans’ Golf Association Killard Leavy Trophy.

This was won by Carolyn Crawford and Norma Thewlis, who will represent Tavistock in the finals at Yelverton later in the year;  runners up were Pat Pope and Myra Sussex.
