Tavistock men firsts 2

Exeter University 3

TAVISTOCK mens’ first team relinquished top spot in Conference South after this home defeat to the student side and have dropped to third place in the league.

The university side were the quicker to settle into their rhythm in this game and with the Reds initially struggling to defend against the structured attack as the visitors raced into a 3-0 lead.

As the home side began to work out how to defend effectively against Exeter University, they themselves started to look more of an a attacking threat and moments before half time grabbed a goal back, thanks to Bob Carr, who cleverly deflected in at a penalty corner.

This game certainly fits the cliche of a game of two halves; the second half saw the home dominate in terms of possession and territory resulting in Exeter being limited to the odd counter attack.

When Si Fenwick pulled a second goal back for Tavistock, following clever play on the left from Forshaw, the comeback looked on but unfortunately, for the home side, they could not find a third goal to claim a share of the points.

It was not the ideal way to end the week which had began so well when the Tavistock side were named ‘Team of the Year’ for 2016 at the Plymouth Sports’ Personality of the Year awards on Monday evening.

The team were presented the award by former Olympic Swimmer Sharon Davies MBE at the ceremony held at Plymouth Pavilions.

Simon Fenwick, on behalf of the club, said: ‘It’s a great honour for the team to win the award as it encompasses all sports and not just hockey.’

They beat off the challenge of Plymouth Primary Schools’ football team, Staddon Heights veterans’ golf team and Plymouth Argaum Rugby to scoop the award.
