IN division one of the Okehampton and district table tennis league Tavistock have taken a 25 point lead after first defeating Okehampton A 8-2.
Nick Jackson won the two singles for Okehampton and Barry Vaughan went close first against Fred Phillips in five sets and against Roger Bowkett, also in five. Roger Bowkett did well to beat Nick Jackson to score a fine maximum.
They did even better in their second against Bridestowe who they defeated 10-0.
Roger Bowkett won his first against Mark Tancock who lost his 100% record. Martin Fowler, Fred Phillips and Roger all scored maximums. In the doubles Fred Phillips and Roger Bowkett beat Mark Tancock and Francis Griffiths. To complete a 10-0 win.
Bridestowe played Academy A with the former only fielding two players, Mark Fogerty and Francis Griffiths — who won two singles each. However, they could not stop George Haskell who won all his singles but Mark and Francis beat Ben Hill and George in the doubles for a 5-5 draw. Also in division one North-Wyke were at home against The Mixtures. Steve Granger put North Wyke 1-0 ahead in the first against Sarah Jackson, Steve Tyler made it 1-1 beating Paul Dumont. Steve went on winning his next two for a fine maximum. Karen Stephenson won two but lost her three games against Paulo. The mixtures won the doubles for a 7-3 win.
In division two Milton Abbot took on Okehampton B. Harry Bryant and Kieran Coyle put Okehampton 2-0 up, but Harry Bryant took Kieran to a fifth leg decider just losing out 9-11. Rob Evans won his game against Maureen Venton in fives sets. In an exciting hard fought doubles the four young players Kieran Coyle and Harry Bryant against Ben Evans and Harry Barnaby, Kieran saw the former win in five for a 7-3 win for Okehampton.
Milton Abbot played Moretonhampstead. Milton Abbot were without Ian Osborne and brought in 10-year-old Heath Marker playing his first league match. He played well in his second singles, he pushed Wendy Cocin all the way just loosing out 7-11, 11-5, 11-13, 10-12. Tim Westcott and Michael Blatchford won two singles each in the doubles Tim and Heath just lost out to Kev Underhill and Graham Adnett in four sets which gave Moreton their first win of the season 6-4.
In a hard fought match between league leaders Okehampton C and Anchorage the latter's David Wilson put his side one up against Ivor Copley.
Frank Cockburn made it 1-1 against Malcolm Hopkins and went on to win in his next two singles. Anchorage went on to lead 6-3 and David Wilson and Colin Jones beat Frank and Martin Rose in the doubles for a convincing 7-3 win to Anchorage.
