ON May 23 boxers from Tavistock Amateur Boxing Club were selected to box for Devon against the Royal Navy and Royal Marines at RMB Chivenor.

Pete Jarman and Theo Evans travelled there for the evening show. Pete boxing at light heavy had a rematch against Jake Madelin, who he had lost to on a split decision a fortnight before.

This was always going to be a hard contest and the bout opened with both men being cautious.

Action was forthcoming in the closing stages when the pace increased as both boxers tried to gain the ascendancy.

A good contest ensued with Pete the better technical boxer and Madelin using a rushing attack with powerful long range hooks, which Pete avoided with good footwork. The result was again a close split decision with Madelin the victor.

Theo Evans faced a tough opponent in SPR Hagan who had a height and reach advantage.

The Tavistock boxer had to rely on his close work and throughout the contest pushed his man back, this was hugely appreciated by the crowd which consisted almost entirely of members of the Royal Marines. A great three rounds ensued, Hagan using his reach advantage trying to keep Theo out.

Theo slipped punches in order to throw punches to the body and head of his opponents; some of the crowd began cheering him on and their appreciation was shown in a standing ovation at the end.

Both boxers gave a good account of themselves, but there could only be one winner, and on this occasion it was given, on a split decision, to Hagan.

Following on from Pete representing Western Counties ten days previously these Tavistock boxers boxing for Devon show that there is a lot of talent in this area and Tavistock ABC hopes to grow and develop the talent in our young people.
