TAMAR and Tavy Gig Club juniors took part in their first big race of the season at Saltash hosted by Caradon Gig Club on Saturday.
Despite the poor weather in the U16s event, in which T and T a crew comprising of four U14s and two U16s, finished second in their heat just behind Looe to earn a place in the final. It was a long wait from 10.30am to 6pm when the final took place but spirits were not dampened by the hideous rain as the crew were ably assisted by Jo Cameron their coxswain, captain Julie Eastaugh their captain and the loyal junior squad supporters!
In a hard fought final battling wind and the strong tide, T and T U16s came in sixth. place.
On Sunday in much improved weather conditions) saw Tamar and Tavy Gig Club enter three crews in the veterans and super vets categories.
Tamar and Tavy ladies super vets had a superb start and were in second place all the way to the buoys. Their coxswain Jo Cameron took them faultlessly round them to face the tough straight run to the finish line, against the strong tide, finishing a respectable fourth.
There were 30 entries and five heats for the ladies veterans. They came second in their first heat, qualifying them for the second heat and another second but just missed out on entering the finals. In the plate final they came fourth.
The men's crew entered the super vet category; coxed by Carolyn Dawe they started off strongly staying but a thole pin break half way through the race cost them valuable time but they went on to come a third in the plate final.
