AT the completion of the final race in the six race Brooks Westward Cross Country League season for 2011/2012 at Plymouth, it was time for the athletes of Tavistock Athletics Club to reap the rewards for their efforts.

In the U13 girls Emily Attfield raise her performances with every race, culminating in victories in the last two - leaving her second overall in the series. In the team event Jasmine Grey and Molly Rickwood were rewarded for their consistency with overall third place.

Alice Rogers was the top female performer in the senior and veteran ladies despite still being under 17. She finished in the top few of her category in every race and was rewarded with a deserved second place in the final standings. Tavistock's second medallist came in the 40-44 veteran ladies with Caroline Steven in second place.

The male categories proved a more fruitful hunting ground for the club. U15 Sam Lane De Courtin was top Tavistock finisher on every occasion, combining his second place in the Westward League with several national competitions and county honours for Cornwall. Devon representative Jordan Channon took third place. They were backed by Pete Jarman, whose consistent finishes helped Tavistock finishing second in the team event.

Harrison Baker and James Best carried the load for the club at U17s level and in the team event they were runners-up position to add to their Devon County team title. The senior men missed out on a top three team position for the first time in several years. The fifth position was still a remarkable performance as the majority of points were contributed by their veteran competitors. With athletes taking the top two positions in the 50-54 category in every race they retained the veteran team shield for the fifth time in the six years.

Top contributors were Tony Symons, winning the M50 title, Martin Exley, who took runners-up spot, and Richard Drage, who won two races in the same age-group. Victory would still not have happened without the points contributed by Chris Champion in the early part of the season and the contributions of Rupert Warren and Charlie Lloyd in the Plymouth race.

The final medal went to the ever-consistent Bob Chapman, who battled throughout the season to achieve an overall third place on the back of his finish in the last race in Plymouth.
