THE achievements of the 2017/18 season were celebrated by Tavistock Swimming Club members, parents and coaches at their annual presentation evening last week in Tavistock Town Hall.
The club welcomed Tavistock Mayor Cllr Paul Ward and Lady Mayoress Jane Ward to share in the celebrations and help present some of the trophies to the successful swimmers.
Special guests Noel and Janice Meakin attended in honour of the late John Reed, who was the founder of the swimming club in 1990.
Janice is John’s daughter and was a founder committee member herself while her two children were club members.
Janice presented a brand new trophy, the ‘John Reed Memorial Trophy’ purchased with monies donated in his memory, to the best newcomer to the club — Freya Murray.
Other trophy winners chosen and awarded by coaches James Lake and Nathaniel Rookes: best junior club swimmer, Katie Roberts; best senior club swimmer, Lucy Hunter; most improved junior girl, Holly Harvey; most improved junior boy, Harry Pearse; most improved senior girl, Cara McVeigh; most improved senior boy, Hamish Noakes and Aiden Weeks; best junior girl, Charlotte Walker; best junior boy, Sam Rice; best open water swimmer, Sam Lake; best in training, Finley Smallshaw; best squad swimmer, Amy Roberts; best relay team, National Masters (Nathaniel Rookes, James Lake, Sam Lake, Alison Whitford); best overall swimmer, Alfie Morgan; most worthy swimmer, Sam Palmer; masters’ swimmer, Gemma Weeks; coaches’ choice, Amber Francis and Orla Maguire; swimmers’ own choice, girls’ Polly Laseby; boys’ Nathaniel Rookes.
Over the season the swimming club hold their own club championships at their home pool, Meadowlands.
All club members are invited to take part in sprint and long distance events and medals were presented by head coach James Lake to swimmers who had achieved first, second or third places.
Newer members took part in an Imps gala over shorter distances and ribbons were also awarded by James on the evening.

Long Distance trophy winners: girls’ 14/U Hannah Walker; boys 14/U Sam Palmer; girls’ 15/O Sarah Teague; boys’ 15/O Nathaniel Rookes; 400m freestyle cup – girls’ Sarah Teague; boys’ Nathaniel Rookes.
The final presentation of the evening was the announcement of the new club and vice captains for the year.
Club captains are Emily France and Ieuan Noakes; vice captains Sarah Teague and Hamish Noakes.
Each were presented with their new club T-shirt to wear in their role in supporting the club and younger swimmers.
