THE Tavi Specials presentation at the Tavy Club this weekend was a celebration of the success of the members.
The emphasis was on 'having fun' on the evening — carrying on the tradition of the spirit of this club which is special in so many ways.
The club, whose members have special needs, together with their their helpers, just love playing football and on their presentation night the goal was to reward those on and off the field this season. Awards were given to all members, coaches, helpers and even the ref!
We were also honoured to see the head coach of Newton Soccability FC Kev and his wife Caroline attend and support the evening.
Robin Rich, the chairman of the Son-Rise Cup, presented the awards and first was to Reece Phillips who won the U12s' most improved, Jack Talbot won the U16s, Simon Wilkinson the adult most improved.
Awards were also given to Ian Muller and Bobby Upham voted by the club coaches.
A special dedication award went to Mark Lewis for his committment in helping the U12s. Ben Burnard won the Clubman award. New child welfare officer Billy Venning received a medal for his excellent service to the members, parents and carers. Wayne Downham, Karl Cudmore, Robyn Hammond, Mike Backwell, Dan Oner, Matt Boon and Bobby Upham all received their coaches medals.
Flowers and vouchers were presented to founder of Tavistock Youth Cafe Plus Cathy Sharp, Sally Perkins for being the first sponsor back in February 2005 and who is so supportive of the disability squad; Louise Swift, Sue Hammond and Sheena Lewis were also thanked.
Will Reed was presented with a signed montage of the 1970s British Lions by club secretary Allen Lewis for all his hard graft at the last four Son-Rise Cup events.
Allen Lewis said a big thank you must also go to Tavistock Tyres who now begin their ninth year supporting the Tavi Specials club and once again have agreed to a full sponsorship for season 2012-2013.
He said: 'As the founder of this wonderful group it is such a privilege to work with so many people who seem to enjoy themselves so much, on and off the pitch. The friendships made at the Tavi Specials are unbreakable and we are excited by new members joining all the time. Our next goal is to make the group a registered charity and we can then open doors to more people and more funding.
