Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East
Galmpton United 2
Okehampton Argyle 3
OKEHAMPTON gained another good away result at the War Memorial Ground against a side two places above them in the league. There was little to choose between the sides for much of this encounter but the class finishing of the outstanding Luke Alden gave Argyle the points.
Both teams sounded each other out for much of the first half and neither side created many chances although the midfield battle was fierce.
Argyle played with five in midfield and only Steve Madge up front and too often were forced into playing the long ball forward which only saw the play come back at their defence. However, they looked sound at the back and their midfield once again showed how they compete for every ball and the team's work rate was outstanding.
The best chance in the first half fell to Galmpton as Alex Bayliss let fly a tremendous shot which was superbly tipped over the bar by Argyle keeper Craig Mullholland to keep the score level at 0 – 0 at the interval.
After the break, Argyle came out with real purpose and started to string together some good passing movements. In the 48th minute Okehampton took the lead. Dave Smith did well wide on the right and fired a ball in, which Ed Squire crashed home into the top corner of the net from the edge of the area.
Argyle brought on Ed Bradshaw for Madge and his power in the air and physical presence started to cause problems in the home defence, but it was Galmpton who scored the next goal on the hour mark. Richard Ridley got behind the Argyle defence on the right and fired in a low cross which was rifled home from close range by Alex Bayliss.
Argyle restored their lead in superb style only three minutes later. Luke Alden picked up Craig Mulholland's clearance on the half-way line and ran at the home defenders, twisting them one way and then the other before side stepping home keeper Congdon and slotting low into the net.
In the 66th minute, great battling by Bradshaw saw him release the ball to Alden wide on the left. Alden cut inside carrying the ball across the face of the home goal before turning back and slotting home another great goal from an acute angle to make it 3-1.
With four minutes of normal time remaining, Galmpton gave themselves some hope when a Robbie Bowker free kick was headed home by Bayliss to make it 2-3, but Argyle's defence played solidly to see out the remaining minutes and earn another precious away win.
