BERE Alston Scouts took to the River Tamar, for a taster session of gig rowing with Tamar and Tavy Gig Club.

The scouts quickly picked up the technique from Tamar and Tavy Junior Squad and enjoyed rowing and the barbecue that followed with Weir Quay Sailing Club cadets.

The event was hot on the heels of taster rows for Tamar Valley and Stannary Hash House Harriers which saw 25 runners pick up an oar and have a go at gig rowing. This ended with a playful competition between the rival hashers and the gig club. Technique triumphed and the winning crew was Tamar and Tavy Gig Club with a mix of men, ladies, veterans and juniors at the oars.

Tamar and Tavy Gig Club also enjoyed a mid-summer annual row from Weir Quay to Bere Ferrers for a pie and pint at the Olde Plough Inn.

A perfect tide and weather saw 30 members enjoy the evening. Twenty five rowed, two kayaked and some greeted the boats on arrival. The row up the creek took an hour, pre-ordered food was served swiftly to permit a leisurely meal in time for the row back with no need to sprint to make the tide but of course some friendly competition between the three boats was inevitable.

The whole trip took three hours.
