The Scottish National Smallbore Rifle Meeting is the largest annual smallbore target rifle shooting event in Scotland with up to 300 people entering from all over the British Isles, at all levels of ability. The venue was Thirlestone Castle grounds at Lauder in the beautiful Scottish Borderlands, and among the competitors were Martin and Amanda Elliott from Okehampton Smallbore Club. They represented their club as a team pair in the combined C and D class. In this competition, one member shoots two 20 shot targets at 100 yards with the other shooting two 20 shot targets at 50 metres; their scores are added together for the result. Martin shot his two 100 yard targets first and shot well, putting the team into first place. The pressure was on for the 50 metre shoot, not to let the team down ... and with a dose of good fortune the team came away victorious! It is the first time OSC have won this competition and the pair were presented with a traditional Scottish trophy, a Quaich (a shallow, one or two-handled bowl used as a drinking cup made for sharing whisky or brandy. At the Commonwealth Games the quaich has come to symbolise love and friendship, with a quaich being presented to every medal winner). Martin shot consistently well in all the individual aggregate competitions, being thrilled to win second place in his class at the end of the week, amongst stiff competition.
