Okehampton U14s 26
Tavistock U14s 15
OKEHAMPTON came out determined to put their name on the Bobby Burgoyne Memorial Cup playing for it against Tavistock.
Tavistock started well with some good rugby scrummaging from the pack and some great driving runs from prop Jaxom Cann.
In a very close match, Okehampton opened the scoring after ten minutes, when a quick ball from the ruck, saw Olly Northcott with a flying run from halfway, to cross the line.
Following the restart Tavistock worked hard and gained a penalty, which was kicked into touch earning them a line out five metres from the try line. This was caught by James Roissetter who was driven over by his team to score his first try of the season.
Tavistock did not give up and were rewarded with a penalty ten minutes later which was successfully kicked over by Harry Edwards. Ten minutes later a good Tavistock scrum and a great run saw returning player Louis Peake score Tavistock’s second try of the day this time in the right hand corner. The difficult conversion was slotted home by full back Harry Edwards. Oke responded just on half time, with good awareness from Cole Pengelly, who had a great game, picking up a loose ball on Tavistock’s try line, to score and make it 12-12 at half-time.
From the second half kick off, Tavistock were caught out when, ever hardworking Saul Holliday, pounced with a great interception to score under the posts. Tavistock narrowed the gap with a penalty kick by Harry Edwards to bring the score to 19-15, with ten minutes to go, leaving Okehampton having to defend with all their might. However, Oke’s Joshua Burgoyne turned over Tavistock’s ruck ball and fed out to Daniel Tomkins who put in a well positioned kick, which a swift Olly Northcott collected well, scoring his second try under the posts.
Both teams played well. Tavistock won most of the scrums and line outs, but Oke were better on the day, getting to the breakdowns and winning the ball.
Okehampton conversions were by Will Cunningham (2), and Joshua Burgoyne. There ware good debut games for Tavistock from Alex Cottam and Robert! Harvey in the front row.
