Wessex 6

TAVISTOCK first XV continued their 100 per cent home record this season with a great win over struggling Wessex at Sandy Park on Saturday.

The Moorlanders bounced back from last week’s loss to record their fourth bonus point home victory from four home fixtures.

They were made to work hard for the win after only leading by a solitary point at half time.

On a perfect day for rugby, Tavistock took their time to find their feet, conceding a number of penalties early in the game. They did strike first however, when Hadfield slotted his first of three, first half penalties. Wessex levelled after an infringement in midfield left Penberthy taking a 10 minutes rest in the sin bin.

With the scores tied it was Wessex who crossed the whitewash first to give themselves an 8-3 lead.

Tavistock, who were back to a full XV, showed their scrum dominance which proved crucial as they went into the half 9-8 up.

The second half was a different story for the Moorlanders when they recorded five tries without reply. First up was colt Jack Easton who finished a well worked try in the corner. From this the next 25 minutes belonged to the Tavistock pack’s dominance and scrum half Jack Glover. Glover capped a man of the match performance with a fine hat-trick, his third sealing the bonus point only moments from the final whistle.

Just when time seemed up, Tavistock scored one of the tries of the season when the kick off was returned by Martin Budden who linked well with Langton and the back line to go the length of the field, only to be cut five metres short. It was Ashley Miller who benefitted when he bundled over from close range to seal the game in style.
