KELLY College rugby coach, Roger Smerdon, notches up his 50th season coaching rugby at the beginning of this term.

Roger played at a high level with his pinnacle representing the South West Counties against the All Blacks. He has spent a career in independent schools including 40 years at Downside.

He has coached at Kelly since 2004 where he is part of a top flight team of coaches that includes former Bath and England player Graham Dawe and former first XV coach Trent College Tony Rolt.

Headmaster Dr Graham Hawley said: 'Roger is a talented coach who can draw on half a century of experience. What strikes me when I observe a coaching session is that he is still very youthful in his outlook and his zest for the game is undimmed.

'As an England Colts selector he is able to recommend talent to the highest level. The boys, sensibly, hang on his every word. There's very little about the game that he doesn't know. He is an integral part of a very strong team that provides our boys with excellent coaching.'

Jack Williams, first XV captain, said: 'It is great being coached by some who you know has had experience at playing top class rugby.

'His technical knowledge within scrummaging is outstanding and we have all improved as players as a result. He is always willing to give his time to those wanting his help, no matter how many times you ask.

'It has been a real privilege to have such a dedicated coach throughout my playing time at Kelly.'
