HALWILL Primary School pupils were inspired to aim high when Team England pole vaulter Molly Caudery gave the children an inspirational talk about her achievements, ambitions and overcoming setbacks.
Molly, aged 19 and from Redruth, Cornwall, represented Team England in the Commonwealth Games 2018 in the Gold Coast, where she came fifth; in the 2017 European Athletics Under 20 Championships she won bronze.
Molly talked to the children about the importance of a growth mindset – the belief that ability is not fixed but something that is developed through hard-work and grit.
‘Aim high; be resilient; take care of each other’, the school’s motto, is based on growth mindset, principles which the children related to when listening to the star pole vaulter. The pupils were amazed that Molly can jump over the equivalent of a double decker bus.
Molly’s visit coincided with the launch of a new Wellbeing Programme the school has introduced into their curriculum. Executive headteacher Ruth Alford said: ‘Mental health problems affect about one in 10 children and young people.
‘The emotional wellbeing of children is just as important as their physical health and they are very much connected.
‘Good mental health allows children and young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rounded, healthy adults.’
