Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one east
Alphington 0
Okehampton Argyle 1
ON a dark, damp and cloudy night in Exeter both teams and the referee agreed to get going early in order to get in the full 90 minutes. The game was hardly a classic with both sides making many changes to their usual line-up. The worn surface also made good football difficult.
Alphington had the better of the first half but Argyle's defence stood firm with Dale Chadwick having a fine game at centre back and debutant keeper Matthew McDonough showing a safe pair of hands.
Alphington went close on a couple of occasions producing a good goal-line clearance from the Argyle defence and having a goal disallowed when, just before half time, Jack Furzer had the ball in the net but was clearly offside.
Argyle looked the better side in the second half and were unlucky midway through when a superb ball into the box was beautifully met by Ed Bradshaw, only for his header to come back off the inside of the post and crossbar with the Alphington keeper well beaten.
The all important goal came just seven minutes from time when Argyle engineered a quick break out of defence down the right and an interchange of three passes released John Wiseman to burst into the box and blast home a shot from just inside the area, the ball squeezing across the line despite the valiant efforts of two Alphington defenders attempting to clear. This was a good win for Argyle in difficult conditions with little to choose between the teams. Once again, Okehampton's work ethic won the day with a good overall team performance.
Devon and Exeter four
Okehampton Argyle Reserves put in a good performance to gain a point in a 1 – 1 home draw against league leaders Heavitree with John Coakley scoring Argyle's goal.
