OKEHAMPTON Running Club's annual handicap race for members is a two lap 5k off-roader through Abbeyford Woods. All runners have a handicap based on their results from time trials held throughout the summer — giving everyone an equal chance of winning as those with a high handicap start the race later giving those with a low handicap a chance to get away in front. The result was a popular win for Sarah Budd-Bell with Jackie Dawes second and Alan Luffingham third. The Bude Rats took over the Mouth-to-Mouth Race from the National Trust this year for the first time, renaming it the Bude Pirate Run and slightly altering the format but there were no changes to the steep hills on the eight mile coastal path route. This presented no problem to ORC Charlotte Radnor who completed the 22 mile Exe to Axe race earlier in the year. She finished in 1 hour 20 minutes 04 seconds and won the prize for the second female under 35 to finish. Rob Kelly set himself a mammoth challenge and travelled the 80 miles from Street in Somerset to Okehampton by kayak, running on foot and cycling to raise money for the House of Rachel Charity. He completed the journey in under 18 hours.
