Devon seconds E West Whitchurch seconds v Lewdown thirds THIS local derby boiled down to a great partnership, some excellent catching and an excellent piece of sportsmanship. Whitchurch lost the toss and were invited to bat first on a damp but drying track. Run scoring early doors was difficult as Vernon and Hughes bowled tight lines. Whitchurch were in a lot of trouble at 20-3 off 15 overs. Then came the partnership which changed the game. Meadows, making his first appearance of the season, and skipper Wallace, finally in some batting form, played themselves in and made hay while the sun shone. Along the way they were assisted by some friendly fielding but added 100 in a shade over 12 overs, and 161 in all over just 16 overs. The ball went to all parts of the field through some clean hitting, until Meadows was well caught by Cowley off Hughes for 69. Wallace's knock ended soon after as he was yorked by Vernon for 68. Throughout the Whitchurch innings, Vernon (2-28) and Hughes (2-16) posed the greatest threat. The tail were able to build on the platform given to them. Dunne continued his good run of form and with Hall (17) got Whitchurch to maximum batting points. Jacob Brown chipped in with four late wickets as Whitchurch closed on 232-9. The Lewdown reply was soon in trouble. Gavin Hall once again bowled an accurate spell, well backed up by his fielders. Gavin's nine overs went for just 16 runs with three deserved wickets. Andy Hall bowling well at the other end. Behind the stumps Tilsely caught everything that came his way. Young Kian Burns counter attacked playing some lovely shots on his way to 28 and played in a commendable sporting manner. Hodge's first ball hit several items on its way through to Tilsley. Though the umpire gave him not out, he walked off admitting that he had hit the ball. An excellent piece of cricket. The Lewdown innings was now in tatters. Horn played a few unorthodox shots on his way to 34, but further wickets from Tamblin and Poole, together with a fine catch from Emma Jackman saw Whitchurch winners by 114 runs.
