OKEHAMPTON Smallbore Club held, over two weekends, the Open South West Short Range Championships 2014, for prone rifle shooters, drawing 100 competitors from far afield. It marked the 37th year running at the club of this prestigious competition organised by Bernard and Yvonne Rendle.
Competitors shoot in one of four classes, depending on their ability, with divisions for veterans and ladies; four rounds of 20 shots in each round are fired in timed conditions at the club's indoor range – two rounds at 25 yards and two at 25 metres.
OSC had many representatives shooting and they had good results. In the top 'A' class, Okehampton Club's best shooter Paul Batten, currently number two in the county, had a superb competition and was second overall; he was also second in the South West and won the 'A' class veterans.
Other OSC members had really good shoots too. In Class B, Di Johnson, the club's top lady shooter, was second in the class B ladies competition and fifth overall. In class C, Martin Elliott won the veterans and in class D, Chris Short was second overall; Peter Blake won the class D veterans and was third overall.
