Devon C West
Whitchurch v Yelverton
CHARLIE Barriball (157 not out) and Tom Sherrell (103 not out) both made their maiden Devon League hundreds as they took the sword to Yelverton's bowlers with a 221 run partnership off just 18 overs.
Whitchurch lost the toss and were put in by the Yelverton captain on what looked a good batting track. Towl and Elliot opened the batting for Whitchurch making 32 in good time before Towl was caught behind off the bowling of Pearson (1-50). That brought Charlie Barriball to the crease who played the innings of his life smacking the Yelverton bowlers to all parts of the ground on his way to his maiden Devon League century.
Barriball and Elliot complemented each other nicely with Elliot backing up Charlie Barriball who was the aggressor. Elliot then fell just after drinks for 21 caught and bowled by West (1-57). Billy Barriball then joined younger brother Charlie at the crease but couldn't match him and he was bowled by Van Niekerk (2-83) on 7. Smith was Van Niekerk's next victim as he was out bowled for 0.
Tom Sherrell then came to the crease with the score on 117. Sherrell played in typical fashion going after anything that was loose and he and Barriball didn't hold off. Sherrell made his 100 off just 47 balls in one of the most entertaining innings that the home team had ever seen and Barriball, whose timing was second to none on the day, went from 100 to 150 in just 19 balls as the home side ended on a huge 338 for the loss of just 4 wickets.
Yelverton's run chase didn't start too well as they lost Grove in the second over when he was clean bowled by Kerswell (1-17) for a duck. Jacobs looked to stick around and try to frustrate the Whitchurch bowlers but he was run out by Sherrell who was in the thick of the action for 13. Parker (15) and West (23) looked to bat out the overs and gain batting points for their side but Parker edged one to the keeper off Poole (1-34) and West soon fell lbw to Bone (2-47). Zubar and Townsend looked to attack the Whitchurch bowlers and both played aggressively. Townsend was bowled by Billy Barriball (1-28) for a quick fire 30. Zubar however continued to go after the Whitchurch bowlers and batted exceptionally before falling to Towl (2-23) on 98. Yelverton fell well short in the end making 223 for 9 wickets.
Whitchurch picked up 19 points from the derby leaving them second in the C West division whilst Yelverton got themselves 7 points and in need of a victory in the coming games. Whitchurch are away to Chagford next week who sit just below Whitchurch in the table.
