Friendly Tavistock AFC 1 Plymouth Argyle 5 A LARGE crowd, on a beautiful summer's evening witnessed a fine game of football at Langsford Park with Football League division two side Plymouth Argyle fielding their full first team squad writes Derek Pethick. As expected the professional club had the greater share of possession throughout the 90 minutes; however, the performance by the home team bodes well for the coming season, with the defence looking particularly strong. Set pieces from free kicks enabled Argyle to score twice in the opening half hour. The opening goal came in the 18th minute when Tyler Harvey headed home from a free kick from just outside the angle of the penalty area. Carl McHugh made it 2-0 with an identical free kick saw him rise above the home defence and power home a header from eight yards. Andy Meeds then made a couple of fine saves to deny the visitors from increasing their lead. Following a terrific move down the left, Argyle increased their lead shortly before the interval when Matte Lacointe converted with aplomb from 12 yards. Early in the second half Argyle made it four when Jason Banton scored with a great shot to give Andy Meeds no chance of saving. Mid-way through the half the Lambs conceded a penalty, which Nathan Thomas placed low into the corner of the goal. The home team were finally rewarded for the good performance against the professionals, when Carlton Farnham pounced on a rare mistake in a well marshalled Argyle defence, to slot the ball home from eight yards. With 15 minutes to go the Lambs had a chance to reduce the arrears when they were awarded a penalty. Carlton Farnham was fouled in the penalty area, but Ian Rook's penalty kick was turned around the post for a corner kick. In the last ten minutes Argyle created two scoring opportunities but their efforts flashed just wide of the target. The home team can take a lot of credit from their performance against full time professionals. New Tavistock AFC manager Kevin Hendy's introduction of new players at the club certainly showed through as the team is a vast improvement on last season. Tavistock play their next friendly this Saturday against Stoke Gabriel, kick-off 3pm.
