THE British Championships and Commonwealth Games trials were a huge success for the Kelly College School swimming team. They were held at the newly refurbished Commonwealth Games pool in Glasgow earlier this month. Kelly pupils Milly Furneaux, Steph Reynolds, Emily Cutler, Chloe Barrow and Tom McClagan alongside Old Kelleians Cameron Brodie and Oliver Willis represented the club. Kelly's youngest competitor at the meet was Emily Cutler. Emily's week began with a personal best in the 100m back, narrowly missing the final by .01. This was an age group school record. In the 200 metre backstroke junior final Emily recorded a time of 2 minutes 18.97 seconds for a sixth place. Captain Steph Reynolds, swimming in the same events, led her team in style. In the 100m backstroke semi-final she narrowly missed the final but recorded another personal best. She produced another PB and final swim in the 200m back and PB in the 50. Both the 100m and 200m were age and open school records. Chloe Barrow progressed to the final of the 50m fly finishing with yet another personal best in fifth place. Chloe backed up these two sensational performances with a valiant swim in the 200m fly and fifth place achieving the European Junior qualifying time and another school age group record. Tom McLagan was in spectacular form at the meet and in the Junior final of the men's 400IM. Tom's power and endurance took him through to second place in the final, with a new school age group record – a sensational success. Milly Furneaux showed great spirit and raced in the 50m breaststroke despite breaking her thumb and finger a month before the meet, significantly hindering her preparation. Old Kelleian Cameron Brodie produced great form placing a bronze medal in the 200m fly securing his selection onto the Scottish team for the Commonwealth games. Oliver Willis, who now swims for Bath, also was on fine form in the 50m back.
