OKEHAMPTON Golf Club assistant professional Jonny Rattenbury has won his first professional tournament since he turned pro in September.
Last Thursday, in very wet and windy conditions, a strong field took to the course at East Devon Golf Club in a Devon PGA Order of Merit event.
Persistent rain flooded the greens and caused a suspension of play.
After more than an hour's delay, play resumed. Rattenbury, aided by the shot of the day, holing his second shot from a fairway bunker on the par four, 14th hole, won the event with a score of 35 points; Nicky Maddison from Saunton was two points behind in second place and third, with 32 points, was Christian Vine from Woodbury Park. Victory puts Jonny up to fifth place in the Devon PGA Order of Merit standings with only two events to go.
On Saturday a four ball two to count Stableford was held at Okehampton Golf Club.
The winners of division one with 87 points were Matt Soby, Malcolm Hooper, Paul Prouse and Darren Prouse. They were closely followed into second by Mark Curtis, Steve Rice, Richard McFarlane and Kevin Perryman on 86pts. Division two was won by Rod Jones, Nick Atkinson, Adrian Tilley and John Leonard with 85ps and in second were brothers John and Steve Latham, Graham Pengelly and Richard Johnson with 83pts.
The ladies contested a greensomes Stableford competition with drawn partners for the Rees Baker cup. This resulted in a close contest with Pam Jarman and Maggie Caws attaining 34pts and winning the trophy. Lorna Evans and Janice Thwaites were second with 33pts on the back nine from, in third Michelle Widdows and Lynn Hazelton.
