Devon D Yelverton v Filleigh YELVERTON started their league campaign in excellent style with an emphatic 10-wicket win against Filleigh at Langton Park, netting 19 points in the process. Veteran Geoff Brain was the hero for Bohemians who, asked to better Filleigh's 147-8, did so without the loss of a wicket. Brain, aged 49, made 91 and Dave Ackford was also unbeaten on 31 in an unbroken opening partnership of 148 scored off 35 overs. Yelverton bowled first and took a wicket with the first ball of the season with Dom Rushton the successful bowler having the Filleigh opener caught at mid-wicket by David Ackford. The main resistance came from Filleigh's Devon batter Morgan Harrison-Hooton who finished unbeaten on 79. Victorious captain Rich Goldsby-West was delighted by their success, with his side looking to win back their C Division status at the first attempt. Goldsby-West said: 'It was a pleasing performance and if it was not for one player (Harrison-Hooton) on their side, we could have been chasing down a much lower total. Geoff (Brain) was a real winner with the bat and was ably supported by Dave Ackford, they picked off the runs impressively. The wickets were shared around, too, which is always good to see. Rushton (2-17), Stabin Joseph (2-22), Iain Cunningham (2-24) and Pat Hobbs (2-23) all picked up a brace of wickets and with skipper West and Matt Tamsett also keeping things tight Filleigh reached 147-8 off their allotted 45 overs. n This Saturday Yelverton are away to Whitchurch, 2pm.

Yelverton seconds v Torquay seconds YELVERTON seconds went down to a disappointing defeat at Torquay seconds on Saturday. Yelverton skipper Gavin Jones lost the toss and the visitors were asked to bat first in the bowler friendly conditions.  Jones (0) fell early to the bowling of overseas player Singh and was followed shortly after by Mark Rallings (6), both bowled off their inside edges by balls that kept low.   Veteran Gerry Keen (9) and Mark Symes (12) rallied briefly but both departed in quick succession to leave a scoreline of 34-4.  After Chris Cottrell was out lbw, the innings slowly subsided for a disappointing 56 all out, Steve Colmer was left undefeated on 9 not out. Chasing down 57 to win never looked like troubling Torquay seconds too much with players with premier experience in their batting line up, but in tricky batting conditions Torquay slipped to 24-2 with both Tim Western (16) and D Lear (0) bowled in successive balls by 17 year old Ben Pearson (8-2-18-2). Veteran Ian Dawe (2-17) chipped in with two wickets at the other end as Torquay finished on 57-4, J Crooks top scoring for Torquay with 21. Despite the loss, skipper Gavin Jones said: 'It was a bad day at the office.  Although the toss was important, if the batsmen had managed to get us up to 100-120 on that wicket, I think we could have had a good finish.'.
